As nostalgically fun as it was to see a chubbier, balder and 25-years-older Thomas Dolby performing “The Flat Earth” in yesterday’s post, I must cop to a special adoration for his “Windpower” (also from The Golden Age of Wireless), with its Gary-Numan’s-synths-meet-Peter-Gabriel’s-gated-reverb-drums and New Romantic lyrical idealism.
I wish this YouTube clip could convey the scienterrific [...]
Champ and Racers (Yaletown, Vancouver, 1 July 2009)
So Champ and I decided to take a break from our endless unpacking and walk a gruelling 1.25 blocks from home to take in the Yaletown Grand Prix bike race this sunny and warm Canada Day in Vancouver. One great thing about our neighbourhood is that for [...]
My Asthma (Toronto, 30 May 2009, 7PM)
(Soundtrack: Henry Cow, Leg End)
From “A Few Don’ts for Débutants”:
Never put your hand on a man, except in dancing and in taking his arm if he is usher at a wedding or your partner for dinner or supper. Don’t allow anyone to paw you. Don’t hang on anyone for support, and don’t stand or walk with your chest held [...]
I’m not going to make any excuses for enjoying ABC’s The Unusuals. There are as many reasons why I shouldn’t like it — like individual plots too pedestrian for the rich character arcs — as there are reasons I should (ever-more-interesting character back-stories and banterlicious dialog plus the added bonus of watching Oz alumni Terry [...]
Champ is endlessly amused by the stoner jargon of my Calgary youth. I won’t embarrass myself further with tales of getting, um, baked in the middle of the Canadian Rockies in my university days, but I will pass along this silly story from the Toronto Star regarding our new home, Vancouver, and the 2010 Winter [...]
Dear Toronto,
My (ridiculously attractive and articulate) blogbuddy Eric (sometimes known as “Sheepy”, and one of the many correspondents with whom I am criminally behind in my responses) wrote a few weeks ago:
I have no answers. I only have questions. Why is it wrong to cheat on someone, but fine to break up with them, when [...]

(Intro: 12 September 1983)
Hey, did I ever tell you I was a DJ? Oh, not the glamorous kind of DJ that elicits a slavish devotion from crystal-addled partiers, the other kind of DJ: a radio DJ.
When I was coming of age in Calgary, Alberta, there was a [...]

Turn It UP: (Consolidated: “Message to the People“)
I was never much a fan of mash-ups, thinking them kind of… gimmicky? And over the years I’ve acquired a rather large collection of music remixes but, for the most part, found them more a diversion than main course eatin’.
And then I downloaded the spectacularly fun — and solid argument for remix culture — RiP: [...]

A note about the images… flickr’s being hardass about the images hosted on their servers, which is their right, so in an effort to ease their concerns, I’m moving the ones they consider contentious to another server. That’ll mean there’ll be quite a few broken images until the move is complete. My apologies for the inconvenience.
