Iowa > California, for real.
At one time I wanted to live in Los Angeles (and tried very hard to do just that). At another time I wanted to live in San Francisco (and tried very, very hard to do that, too).
Now I’m hard-pressed to think about even visiting California. Boycott? You’d better fucking believe it.
Hugs to my CA friends and family (biological & chosen) who must be seriously disappointed today. There will be civil disobedience tonight. Arrests + processing + public defenders = one hefty bill for a state whose economy is in the shitter.
Some day (soon), the majority might rule that Spanish is the only official language of California.

love me some DKs! I will be protesting tonight in Chicago, and arrested if it comes to that.
Was in SF for the weekend the tension was palpable. Pisses me off since i literally know no one who voted Yes on prop 8. Then again the family is mainly in stonerville, wake and bake, Santa Cruz. Aww Jello brings a smile to my face..
Jack
yes, i’m *extremely* disappointed. but you know – i have faith that at some point soon prop 8 will just be a footnote in the history of religious bigotry in california. after this decision there’s anger, mobilization and power. the tide *is* changing and with the republican party in shambles and their voting block dying off, the majority will rule. the thing is it just takes a vote. the gay community has been notoriously bad at mobilizing our own to actually get out and do just that. hopefully this is the wake-up call. it *has* to be.
Yeah, apparently my man and I are still married. Only now other people like us in California cannot get married. So I’m supposed to be glad about my marriage? Isn’t that a little like going out for sushi and being the last table to get served before they run out of rice? I weary of being American.
But Rick, you’re in your very own class now! Isn’t that just great? You’re special!
Gah. I’m happy that you’re still legally married, but pissed that other gay and lesbian couples don’t have the same option. For now, anyway. It is going to overturned one way or another. It’s just a crying shame that it’s later than sooner.
I hate to say that I wasn’t surprised by the ruling. I listened to the live stream of the legal arguments and the questions asked by the judges (none of which I can remember right now) made me think that they felt that they had to uphold Proposition 8, based on the arguments that were presented to them and the issues they were asked to consider (whether Prop 8 was a Constitutional amendment or revision).
I’m not a lawyer of any sort, let alone a constitutional lawyer, but I disagree with the California Supreme Court – I think that it is a Constitutional revision. It cancels out the Equal Protection Clause Section 7, Clause b, which is a hell of a revision.
I was in West Hollywood on Tuesday night for some of the march (until my asthma started acting up – bad asthma!). There’s still a long way to go, but the tide is turning. Of that I am positive.
Carol Elaine, I’d just like to say that your blog posts on this (and other) issues are so awesome. People, click on her name and check ‘em out…
Awww!
*blushing*
That really means a lot to me. Thank you.
I agree bstewart23 but having lived in Toronto for three years, (1987-1990), I was taken aback when I went to a gay book store. Magazines had words, paragraphs and whole pages redacted! Text not pictures! Things get pretty rowdy here and people can be idiots but at least they are allowed to express themselves without the “hate speech” police cracking down on them . Canada has a serious problem with freedom of expression. It’s a lot easier to build consensus if you don’t allow everyone to speak.
Sorry this was on your previous post here:
bstewart23 Nothing has made me shrink from America — my term for the visceral reaction to all that’s going on in your land, the land I once wanted to be my own — more strenuously than the greed, lies and stupidity in the so-called debate on universal health care.
Honestly, Rick, your country is sick. Sick in body, mind and spirit. I have nothing to offer — certainly no suggestions for healing — other than the good wishes of a neighbour who sincerely wants y’all to find your way through this nasty, NASTY mess.
