Well, this news certainly freed up a lot of space on my iPod. The guy who crafted some of my most beloved songs, Prince, gets purged from all my media:
When asked about his perspective on social issues—gay marriage, abortion—Prince tapped his Bible and said, “God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, ‘Enough.’”
Indeed, girl. Enough.
ADDENDUM: You think the slug for this post is trite? Try this: Prince, you are DEAD TO ME.
ADDENDUM THE SECOND: Check out the comments for a suggestion (via P/e/r/e/z) that it was a serious misquote. I’ve searched high and low and, as of this addendum, P/e/r/e/z is the only source for the denial.

She’s a mess. Always has been.
Oh, Prince. You idiot.
ah prince, you’re an androgynous, assless-pants wearing paragon of moral virtue.
(not).
Just read an update and his “camp” is saying he was horribly misquoted
from Perezhilton.com, lol
Apparently, the interviewer did not even use a recorder when she spoke with His Holy Purpleness, and that when she called his people to fact check, it turned out she had several factual inaccuracies, including a little bit about Prince recovering from hip surgery, which he never even had. Like Prince is really made of bones or something and not nebulous gold glitter – come on!
What His Purpleness actually did was gesture to the Bible and said he follows what it teaches, referring mainly to the parts about loving everyone and refraining from judgment.
That sounds better, considering he’s a man who caused his own Controversy!
“We’re very angry he was misquoted,” says our Prince insider.
Ooooo- I have a gay friend that lives and breathes all things Prince. I wonder how he’ll feel about this.
I sure hope it’s a misquote.
Seeing as how His Purpleness spent most of his own life “sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever…”
Well, he is a Jehovah’s Witness, and he has pretty much turned his (now fully covered) back on his raunchy songs and antics of the past.
That said, from the most cynical perspective the man does need to make a living and the last thing he needs to do is piss off the fan base that continues to buy and enjoy his back catalogue.
I’m sure we’ll be reading more about this in the coming days–I too am hoping that he was outrageously misquoted. He seems like a ‘live and let live’ kind of guy.
“Am I black or white? Am I straight…or gay? Controversy!”
Girl, please.
Prince was one my music staples growing up in the 80s. Now this? The fact that he’s a Jehovah’s Witness really makes me believe that he probably wasn’t taken that much out of context. Oh, that and Kevin Smith’s story on how Prince hired him to make a documentary about religion. (It’s in 4 parts at YouTube).
Anyway, this is just disappointing, but not altogether surprising.
the 40-odd discs I already have on hand will still get played… as well as the countless bootlegs. but my days of paying $100 for concert tickets are surely over.
I wonder when he’ll do the Donna Summer retract?
If he really hasn’t said those things, then why hasn’t someone from his camp said something already?
I guess the “Black, white, Puerto Rican/Everybody just a-freakin’” era truly is over. Part of his appeal to me was his advocacy of people of all creeds getting down under the same freaky purple banner. This is all very sad.
Taking “Erotic City” off all my party mixes is going to be a serious bummer.
