Civic Holiday

Only in Canada could there be a civic holiday unimaginatively named “Civic Holiday”. Oh, sure, in Saskatchewan this day is called Saskatchewan Day, in New Brunswick it’s called New Brunswick Day and in British Columbia it’s… well, you get the idea.

Alberta — always the shit-disturber of the country — calls this first Monday in August “Heritage Day” which is ironic since there’s no discernible heritage at all in Alberta. In Ontario it gets totally fucked up, with municipalities going batshit crazy with their own, made-up holidays named after serial killers and psychic healers from the province’s spotty past: Simcoe Day in Toronto, Colonel By Day in Ottawa, Joseph Brant Day in Burlington, Founders’ Day in Brantford, McLaughlin Day in Oshawa, Alexander Mackenzie Day in Sarnia, James Cockburn Day in Cobourg and John Galt Day in Guelph.

I’ll admit, it is pretty cool for Coburg to name its holiday after the star of the Flint movies.

Not everyone gets the day off (Champ, for example; sorry, pal!) but in Toronto, many who do high-tail it to Montreal for the gay pride party there. The rest of us? We hit the ferry to the island…
