“The Best Corner in the World” Redux

Four months ago, I posted concerning the ludicrous real estate development slogan for a condo at the corner of Yonge and Bloor Streets in downtown Toronto. Shall we again check in on “The Best Corner in the World”?

Yonge & Bloor Streets, Toronto, 15 March 2008

See the wooden planks sticking up from the middle lanes of Bloor Street East and West? They’ve been there for at least three months. See the orange metal plates in the middle of the intersection? The day earlier — Friday — at 8AM, rush hour, there was a big hole in the middle of the intersection, traffic snarled in all directions. A cop was directing frustrated drivers, ignoring those who ignored the no-turn signs quite clearly displayed at that time of day.

This is the most famous intersection in Canada. It’s hard to imagine any justification for the glacial pace of the repair work or how it is that an allegedly First World city can look so sloppy, so in disrepair and so… ugly for so much of the year. “The Best Corner in the World”? Hilarious.

Addendum: Aaaaannnnd come Monday morning rush hour, two lanes of Yonge Street are blocked off, too.

Here’s a crazy idea: why not fine every car making an illegal turn at this intersection — my guess would be one every 3-4 minutes — and apply those fines to making incrementally-tiny repairs on the weekends, too?

Hey, Brett: I just came across your blog: What a wonderful surprise! Nice work here, bro. Love the variety of things as well as the issues you’re bringing up. And I couldn’t agree more with the abortion that’s taking place at the south/east corner of Dung and Poor. It’s actually the quintessential example of what’s happening to Toronto these days – poor planning, bad architecture, horrendous disregard of the past and contempt for the actual people who intend to live there. And those are the good points!

Hope all is well with you. Keep up the great work.

    All my best –
    Moze

As I jostled with hoards of unattractive people a couple of hours ago at Yonge and Bloor, was pushed around the obtrusive construction into oncoming traffic, and gazed at “THE BEST CORNER IN THE WORLD” sign, I thought about you and a possible blog entry. Imagine my glee when I checked this evening! But now have this urge to take cloud pics….

Oh, I was kinda hoping you had an urge to take naked, sitting-on-a-chair-backwards pics.
