About six weeks ago, we looked at IKEA Canada’s price-gouging on a few items and their bullshit attempts at spin control when Canadian consumers started paying closer attention to the huge discrepancy in pricing north and south of the border. So in light of the festive shopping season in which we currently find ourselves, it should be good for a giggle to take a boo at the latest prices offered by IKEA Canada.
For the record? Today’s exchange rate is:
And now let’s go to the “New at IKEA” section of both the U.S. and Canadian websites. Uh-oh.
The U.S price for the simple, clean design of the Malm storage unit:
And in Canada?
That’s 65% markup, folks! (Add in the Goods & Services Tax and you’ve got almost 75% markup. Seventy-five fucking percent!)
IKEA’s holiday gift to you, Canadian consumers! (Insert overused “IKEA is Swedish for _____ _____” quip here.)

Hmm.
That unit is also $99 AUD, and we’re currently going at 92.5 US cents.
Boo.
I’d say you shouldn’t stand for that, but you seem to be on top of it. (It’s a touch harder to pick things up from other countries when your country is its own continent.)
IKEA sucks anyway, though. I heartily recommend getting furniture from local independent furniture retailers, if you have such – it’s better-made, can be bought *assembled*, and looks nicer. And less generic.
