How long does it take to get from my apartment to my gym’s sign-in desk? The exact amount of time it takes to listen to New Order’s “Your Silent Face” on my iPod, that’s how long.

And, for serious, at 6:30 AM, in the crisp, bright morning air of downtown Toronto, is there a better soundtrack for the walk? No, there is not. There are few songs both beautiful and perfectly constructed for syncopated activities, too.

You can search the YouTubes for terrific live performances by the group or you can simply watch this home-grown video from realitybites, which captures quite well both the tone of the song and the Factory Records aesthetic of the time:

Well, for the crisp morning air, I’d recommend The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony (that and the fact that it also runs in at a tidy 5 mins 58 seconds). But then again, it’s probably only good for the walk, where as New Order is pretty much good for anything. You win.

Don’t be so quick to dismiss “Bittersweet Symphony”, John. On your suggestion I gave it a try and it’s perfectly suited to my morning walk — though it does run out a few seconds before arrival at my gym’s sign-in desk. It’s perfectly acceptable during the workout, too, depending on the exercise.

Also on the playlist this morning was Utah Saints’ “Something Good” which is aggressively Kate Bushy and resurrects long-buried memories of 3AM dancing at The Roxy. And watching SiCKO last night reminded me that while I have no love for The Rolling Stones, “Street Fighting Man” is one terrific song for getting through a wicked cardio sesh, starting with jangly opening chords and the THWUMP of the kick-drum. The time is right for a palace revolution, but where I live the game to play is compromise solution! I can’t help but think The Dandy Warhols could turn it into, like, the most awesome cover evah.
